SIGNS (SIGNALS)

My collection Signs (Signals) arose while I was searching for unique physical objects to photograph in everyday places. Signage is deeply embedded in our culture, and is critical for communicating, teaching, and reinforcing our collective beliefs. We are so surrounded by signs of all types that they can become nearly invisible and mundane. That may also make us feel invisible, as if we lack significance or meaning. We get lost in the urban landscape much like the signs do.

By photographing words up close or using strategic cropping, I try to obscure the original meaning of the signage and allow for other possible meanings, while also trying to highlight the individuality of the object. Maybe after viewing my collection you will notice problems that could be fixed and have ideas about how that might happen. Or maybe you’ll discover some other wonder or find something amusing where it was least expected.
